The Failures options can be used to deal with undelivered e-mail based on either the Sender or the Subject, or parts of them.
E-mail is sometimes returned to you as undeliverable, there are several reasons: |
The e-mail address was incorrect |
The account has been closed |
The host exists but not the account |
The mail-box is full |
For each e-mail account you can set up rules to detect returned e-mails. You will see a bin for each account in the E-mail screen, this holds any returned e-mails. |

Tips on the Sender |
If you got the e-mail address wrong or the e-mail address does not exist, your original e-mail will be returned by your service provider.
In this case, the Sender will always be the same, making it very simple to detect.
For example: |
Sender is undeliverable@friendlymail.com
would match any messages from that exact address. |

Tips on the Subject |
If the e-mail was sent to a valid e-mail address, it may be returned if the mail-box is full or if the account name (everything up to the @ symbol) does not exist.
In this case, your original e-mail will be returned by the e-mail host for whoever you were e-mailing, so there is no way to match the Sender, you'll have to use the Subject.
Typically, the Subject of the returned e-mail will contain words that you can look for, most commonly: |
undeliverable |
delivering |
returned |
failed |
problem |
Tip It's best to wait until you get some e-mail returned to you to see what the subject says, rather than guessing, because you might end up filtering out legitimate e-mails by looking for the wrong word. |
